One of the major health problems the world is suffering today is obesity. If you are keeping up in the news, a third of the world population is obese and the number is increasing by the minute. The world is living in the fast food society and it is not a surprise that most of the children nowadays are becoming obese. Making children take healthy food is a constant struggle that happens on a daily basis. However, if you know how to prepare healthy food that could entice your children, making them reject their fast food choices would be easy. It’s all about healthy choices, color, variety, and instead of junk food, you can always prepare healthy snacks.
Healthy Food Choices: Controlling your food starts on the food you pick up from the supermarket or restaurant. Remember, your children would only eat what you bring home from the supermarket, restaurant, or cafeteria. Choose low fat, sugar free, non fat, and fresh unprocessed foods. Instead of giving your children lunch money, you can prepare them a healthy lunch. If you don’t have the time to prepare for their lunch bag, you can always find a school that serves healthy foods and snacks. Treating your children to an occasional ice cream or cake is okay. However, serving them and continually feeding them with sugar and saturated fat on a daily basis is a one way ticket to obesity.
Variety (Color, Texture, and Flavor): Kids love variety. You should know that young children are attracted to bright colors, and this is the same reason why yellow corn is very popular. Fruits and vegetables come in a variety of colors. You can always mix and match to make the food you are preparing attractive to your child. Don’t stick to one flavor, texture, or color, use a variety of them. Fruits and vegetables are not only colorful, but they are also healthy. Fresh fruits are a healthy dessert substitute. You can always prepare your food differently from barbecue, stir-fry, baked, and others. Feeding your kids with fresh foods and vegetables would help them appreciate the natural flavor of healthy snacks and foods.
Do-It-Yourself Snack: Make healthy food preparation fun and interesting. You can always involve your children in preparing their snacks. Children are naturally curious and they want to put their hands on everything as much as possible. Show your children that preparing a healthy snack can be done. This way, they will know that there is more to eating than just fast foods and ready to cook meals. Additionally, if you are the one preparing the snack, you can always (at all times) control the amount of salt, sugar, or saturated fat included in the diet.
You can do a lot of magic in your kitchen and start serving your kids with healthy foods and snacks. However, to make things easy on your children, as cliché as it sounds, you have to set yourself as an example. You may need to change your eating habit and eat healthy. Your children will never eat healthy if they don’t see you enjoying the same thing.
